MRICloud: An online cloud-computing platform examines changes in brain structure during Huntington's disease progression

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has substantially enhanced our ability to examine the brain anatomy and functions in neurodegenerative diseases. In Huntington's disease (HD), regional brain atrophy begins many years prior to the motor onset (during the "premanifest" period), but the spatiotemporal pattern of regional atrophy across the brain has not been fully characterized.

Johns Hopkins scientists Dr. D. Wu and colleagues demonstrate an online cloud-computing platform, "MRICloud", which provides atlas-based whole-brain segmentation of T1-weighted images at multiple granularity levels, and thereby, enables analysis of different regional features of brain anatomy. This design potentially has wide applications in a range of neurodegenerative diseases to investigate the dynamic changes of brain anatomy. Read their research article here.
